Timo Werner on his way back to the Premier League?
Werner is reportedly close to a loan deal with Tottenham.
Tottenham is very close to securing Timo Werner on a loan deal with a purchase option of £17 million for the summer. RB Leipzig is reportedly receptive to offers for the German forward, as he has not made a significant impact since his return to the Bundesliga in 2022. Tottenham's manager, Ange Postecoglou, sees him as an offensive option for the squad, and if there's anyone who can revitalize Werner's career, it's him.
Timo Werner stats in the Bundesliga 2023/24:
◉ 8 games
◉ 204 minutes played
◉ 3 goals
◉ 9 shots
◉ 2 chances created
Werner returned to Leipzig and the Bundesliga in the summer of 2022 after an unsuccessful period with limited playing time in the Premier League and Chelsea. His comeback to Leipzig has been mixed; last season, he posted decent stats with 9 goals and 3 assists in the Bundesliga. However, in the current season, he doesn't seem like a player with a future in the Leipzig jersey.
Timo Werner stats in Premier League and Chelsea:
◉ 56 games
◉ 10 goals
◉ 13 assists
But why would Tottenham sign a player who hasn't had success in the last couple of seasons? Werner fits well into Tottenham's offensive style, where his running and counter-attacking play align with their gameplay. It's a relatively low-risk transfer for Spurs as they can assess him until the summer on a loan deal.
Hence, it provides Postecoglou with another offensive alternative, offering additional options for Tottenham's attack, given Werner's versatility to play in multiple positions.
