The 2022-23 Premier League table is taking shape but what about the calendar year so far?

Liverpool have endured a tricky start to the new Premier League season, having won just two of six league outings this term, but they’ve still picked up more points than any other side in 2022.

That underlines how strong they were in the latter half of last season as they hunted down Manchester City in the title race. Pep Guardiola’s champions ride predictably high, sitting 2nd in terms of points over the calendar year.

Tottenham aren’t far behind, albeit having played three matches more, with their impressive form during last season’s run-in vital securing Champions League qualification.

Meanwhile, 2022-23 table toppers Arsenal sit fifth in the calendar year league table, having faltered somewhat in the final hurdles of last season’s top-four race with their north London rivals Spurs.

Newly-minted Newcastle United sit fifth in the Premier League table. Eddie Howe’s Magpies went into the new calendar year in the relegation zone and looking likely to go down. However, bolstered by a number of quality new arrivals - they’ve spent more in terms of net spend than any other side in England - Newcastle’s form has actually been enough to qualify for European competition over the course of 2022 to date.

Chelsea sit sixth in the calendar year table, which goes some way to explaining why the decision was made to replace Thomas Tuchel with Graham Potter from Brighton. The Seagulls have only picked up two fewer points than the Blues in 2022.

Manchester United suffered seven successive away league defeats in 2022 and ended last season in dreadful form, registering their lowest points tally of the Premier League era.

New boss Erik ten Hag started the 2022-23 season with back-to-back defeats, but four wins on the bounce since then see the Red Devils sitting eighth over the course of the calendar year.

Brentford, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Leeds United, West Ham and Leicester have been in midtable form over the course of the year, while Aston Villa, Southampton and Everton have struggled.

In fact, relegated Burnley have as many Premier League points in 2022 as Everton, who pipped them to survival last term.

Meanwhile, newly-promoted Fulham have only taken two fewer Premier League points than relegated Watford in the calendar year, despite having played 15 matches fewer.

The Hornets have been the Premier League’s worst-performing side in 2022 with just 0.47 points per game. Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest have picked up seven and four points respectively, but it’s still very early days for last season’s Championship top two. They will back themselves to do better than the equivalent sides - Norwich and Watford - of last season.
