Liverpool's new number 8, Dominik Szoboszlai
The new midfielder is being compared to Steven Gerrard after his first few matches.
It came as a bit of a surprise when Liverpool signed Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig this summer, and there were probably several Liverpool fans who had to check YouTube videos to see what kind of player he was. He might have been Liverpool's standout player in the first three matches of this year's Premier League, and his on-field qualities have drawn comparisons to the former legend Steven Gerrard. We've looked at some of his skills that could make him a potent asset for Liverpool:
1. Playmaking: Like Gerrard, Szoboszlai possesses excellent vision and creativity, contributing to Liverpool's buildup and chance creation.
2. Work Ethic: Like Gerrard's relentless work rate, Szoboszlai's willingness to contribute defensively and offensively adds depth to Liverpool's midfield.
3. Shooting Precision: His accurate and powerful shots from long range can add another dimension to Liverpool's attacking prowess.
4. Set-Piece Ability: His prowess in delivering set pieces can lead to goals and assists, much like Gerrard's dead-ball expertise.
Furthermore, the young Hungarian possesses excellent technical skills, which makes him unafraid to challenge his opponents. We've witnessed these skills in the first 3 Premier League matches, and what's perhaps impressed the most is his work rate. He has truly put in the effort for the team, especially against Newcastle where they were down to 10 men. In that game, he showcased his leadership by giving his all in the red jersey. Players like him, who demonstrate such commitment, tend to become fan favorites at Anfield.
He, along with Andy Robertson and Mo Salah, is one of the Liverpool players who has created the most chances so far, as they currently top the list with 5 chances created. He's also the midfielder with the most shots per game, averaging 2 shots on target per match. These stats once again resemble those of Steven Gerrard, a player who created chances and took shots on goal in numerous matches. Hence, it's understandable why the comparison has been drawn.
Szoboszlai is known at RB Leipzig for both scoring goals and providing assists, as he managed 10 goals and 13 assists in 46 matches last season. Liverpool has long been in search of a midfielder who can contribute more offensively, and Szoboszlai could very well be that man. While he hasn't scored or assisted in a Liverpool jersey yet, if he maintains his current form, it's only a matter of time. And when he combines this with the work ethic he's displayed so far, it won't be long before he becomes one of the fan favorites as well.
