Joao Cancelo has had a good start at FC Barcelona
Barcelona hope to permanently sign Joao Cancelo next summer.
Joao Cancelo has been brought to Barcelona on a one-year loan deal as he was not part of Pep Guardiola and Manchester City's plans for this season. Last season, he was loaned to Bayern Munich for half a year with mixed success. He spent several matches on the bench, but ultimately contributed with 4 assists and 1 goal in around 17 games for Bayern. However, it was not enough for the deal to be rearranged into a permanent transfer.
Now he has arrived in Barcelona where he is the clear first choice at right-back, and the trust from Xavi is high as he has been given an important role in the team. Like his time at Manchester City, he has the role of moving centrally to participate in the buildup of the game, and he also has offensive freedom to contribute to creating chances. Playing style-wise, Cancelo fits well with Barcelona, and that is probably why he has had the good start he has, making it look like a good match.
Joao Cancelo in La Liga 2023/24:
◉ 6 games
◉ 2 goals
◉ 1 assist
◉ 7 chances created
◉ 23 tackles
Both offensively and defensively, Cancelo has been in good form. In terms of duels, he has been strong, winning 64% of the 75 duels he has had this season. Out on the wing, he has been challenging, completing 18 dribbles with a success rate of 77.8%. His performances have led Barcelona to express a desire to make the contract permanent. If Barcelona can reach an agreement with Manchester City, Cancelo might be seen in La Liga beyond next summer as well.
