Is Rudi Garcia and Napoli the right match?
We have looked at Garcia's career and his stats.
It is a significant legacy for Rudi Garcia to take over from Luciano Spalletti, who led Napoli to their first championship in over 30 years last season. The 64-year-old Spalletti chose to step down as the manager of Napoli, citing exhaustion and a desire for a break from football, so it should not be expected to see the respected Italian in a new job anytime soon. Somewhat surprisingly, it is Rudi Garcia who takes the helm at Napoli, after most recently being in charge of Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, where Cristiano Ronaldo plays.
Rudi Garcia has significant experience from several clubs and has previously been in charge of following teams:
- Dijon (2002-2007): Garcia started his managerial career at Dijon in France's Ligue 2 before guiding them to promotion to Ligue 1.
- Le Mans (2007-2008): Garcia had a brief spell at Le Mans in Ligue 2 before moving on to bigger clubs.
- AS Saint-Étienne (2008-2009): Garcia took over at AS Saint-Étienne but had a relatively short tenure at the club.
- LOSC Lille (2008-2013): Garcia's most successful period came at Lille, where he achieved remarkable success. He led the club to a league and cup double in the 2010-2011 season, winning the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France.
- AS Roma (2013-2016): Garcia then took charge of AS Roma in Italy's Serie A. He guided the team to second place finishes in the league in his first two seasons.
- Olympique de Marseille (2016-2019): Garcia had a successful stint at Marseille, leading the team to the UEFA Europa League final in the 2017-2018 season.
- Al Nassr (2019-2021): Garcia's most recent managerial position was at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he worked with players like Cristiano Ronaldo.
Looking at Rudi Garcia's track record at the clubs he has managed, he has achieved a respectable average points per game. However, his greatest accomplishment and the only trophies in his managerial career came during his time at Lille when he won the double in the 2010/11 season.
Now, he is joining a massive club like Napoli, which is aiming to defend their Serie A title while also performing well in the Champions League. Garcia is known for his focus on offensive play and getting his players to work hard on the field. In that regard, Napoli and Garcia seem like a good match. He has previously shown a willingness to utilize wingers when the attacking game plan allows, so he might be able to further develop players like Kvaratskhelia.
Garcia’s win percentage in his last five clubs:
◉ Lille – 49.61%
◉ Roma – 51.69%
◉ Marseille – 48.59%
◉ Lyon – 53.85%
◉ Al Nassr – 69.23%
The expectations and demands from fans and the media will be high right from the start. Therefore, it's crucial for him to have a strong start to the season in order to win over the fans and build positive momentum.
