CPOY - Clutch Player Of the Year Award
As of the 2022 postseason, the League introduced the new trophies for individual awards, revisiting the classic trophies with players, now just small figurines encased in glass.
When introducing the new trophies, the commissioner also presented a new award, the Cutch player Of the Year award, which has been in the talks for years now, but it never came to fruition. However, there have been media outlets and other organizations that have created their own versions of a clutch player award. These awards generally recognize the player who has been the most effective and successful in critical moments of close games throughout the season.
For example, during the 2020-2021 NBA season, the website NBA.com named Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers as its Clutch Player of the Year. Lillard had several memorable performances in close games, including scoring 55 points, which in itself included a game-winning three-pointer, in a critical game against the Denver Nuggets. However, it is important to note that this award is not officially recognized by the NBA and is not considered as part of the league's official awards.
Although Lillard has been having a banger of a season, matching Mitchell's 71 point game, he unfortunately is not eligible for the award as the Trail Blazers are 13th in the west. Additionally, Lillard has had a much better year in terms of clutchness.
This season we're looking at the likes of De'Aaron Fox to win the award, as he's had multiple game winning shots and crucial plays when it mattered. Fox has been in the league for years now, but due to injuries he never reached his full potential. Finally in a Kings team with proper players to complement his game, and a new coach with championship expertise, has given Fox the opportunity to strive in an ever expanding environment.
