Analyzing Real Madrid’s start to the season
Real Madrid have been fantastic so far this season as they are number 1 in La Liga and have progressed from their Champions’ league group. We’ve dived into the stats to find out the reasons for their success.
Real Madrid had a surprisingly impressive 2021/22 season, winning the La Liga and beating Liverpool in the Champions League final in Paris. And they have not rested on their laurels since.
They have brought in Antoino Rüdiger on a free from Chelsea and then spent the big amount of €80m to sign Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco. The purchase of Tchouameni was a clear picture that they bought in for the future and therefore they also decided to sell the defensive anchor Casemiro to Manchester United
Defensive Solidity:
With only 8 goals conceded in La Liga and 2 in UCL, Real Madrid once again shows a defense stability as they are known of. Thibaut Courtois has been phenomenal in the last years and in Eder Militao and David Alaba they already have two of the most talented defenders in Europe.
Militao stats:
- An average of 1,3 tackles per game
- Average clearances of 2,7 per game
- Match rating of 6,83
Alaba stats:
- 1 goal and 3 assists
- Average of 0,9 tackles per game
- 87,8 pass success percentage
Tchouameni has been fantastic and no Real Madrid fans are talking about Casemiro anymore. He has a pass success of 91,8 % and 2 assists, which shows his technical skills and his interplay with Kroos and Modric has been some of the best we have seen from central midfield in Europe this season
The offensive structure:
Real Madrid is the team with best Pass Accuracy (89,7 %) and shots per Game (18,1) in La Liga this season so far.
With Toni Kroos (93,7), Mendy (94,7%), Tchouameni (91,8%) and Modric (91,2 %) there is a reason why Real Madrid has the highest Pass Accuracy in the league.
Real Madrid’s offense this season has been an attacking force.
Vinicius (7 goals)
Benzema (5 goals)
Valverde (5 goals)
Rodrygo (5 goals)
Vinicius has been fantastic again this season with an average match rating of 7,58 rating him the second-best player behind Lewandowski in the league so far.
More surprising is that Valverde and Rodrygo have built on their game since last season and become big profiles. Valverde in particular has been praised and his ability to play multiple positions has led to him being mentioned as a future Ballon d'or winner.
Both are in the top 10 of match ratings in La Liga, Rodrygo (7,53) and Valverde (7,30)
The best player in the world is now Karim Benzema after winning the Ballon d’or, and what a season he had last year; 50 goals and 16 assists.
This season has started like last year however, an injury has meant that his goal average has not been as high as it should be.
He is still the 5th best rated player in La Liga with an average match rating of 7,45.
The future:
Real Madrid's future is bright. The defenders have the right age, it is clear that you may have to find a replacement at right back where Carvajal is coming of age. Reece James from Chelsea and Pedro Porro from Sporting has both been mentioned as upcoming targets.
Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are in the final stages of their careers, but with players like Camavinga, Tchouameni and Valverde the future looks bright. All three have shown their abilities and that they can perform at the highest top European level.
Vinicius, Rodrygo and Valverde are all players for the future. Benzema is expected to extend his contract soon and he will therefore be playing a couple of more years, but still the next Galactico signing should be a striker, maybe Haaland or Mbappe? ;)
